Multi OS support post Silverlight

In reference to the current rumour on end of road for silverlight after version 5, my question is what happens to cross OS support for apps? Currently silverlight runs in browser mode as well as out of browser mode. For browser mode HTML5 could pick up though still experienced people question some of its capability vis-a-vis silverlight. For out of browser mode would any similar technology exist that would allow an app to work in both say win 8 as well as Mac OS?

Any comments or light into this topic would be very highly appreciated.
